Who is Isa (Jesus) in Islam?

Muslims revere Jesus as one of the greatest prophets and messengers sent by God (Allah). He is mentioned by name 25 times in the Qur'an — more often than the Prophet Muhammad ﷲ is mentioned by name — and an entire chapter, Surah Maryam (Chapter 19), is named after his mother. Belief in Jesus as a true prophet of God is an article of faith in Islam; a person cannot be a Muslim without believing in him.

Core beliefs about Jesus in Islam, at a glance

1. A human prophet, not divine

Jesus is honored as a prophet and messenger of God, but Islam firmly rejects the idea that he is God, the Son of God, or part of a Trinity.

2. Born of a virgin, by God's will

His birth was a miraculous sign, but it does not make him divine — Adam was created without either parent, yet is not worshipped.

3. Given the Gospel (Injil)

God revealed a scripture to Jesus, calling his people back to pure monotheism and confirming the Torah given to Moses.

4. Not crucified

The Qur'an states that Jesus was neither killed nor crucified; rather, it was made to appear so, and God raised him to Himself.

5. Will return before the Last Day

Authentic Hadith describe Jesus descending near Damascus, defeating falsehood, and living as a just follower of Islam.

6. Mary, honored above all women

His mother Maryam is regarded as one of the most righteous women in creation, with an entire Qur'anic chapter bearing her name.

"The Messiah, son of Mary, was no more than a Messenger; many were the Messengers that passed away before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They both had to eat their (daily) food." — Qur'an, Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:75
